Most LSU fans will root for the Houston Astros in the World Series, which starts tonight in Los Angeles. The Stros starting third baseman is former LSU standout Alex Bregman. Bregman recently said LSU prepared him for this moment, something LSU baseball coach Paul Maineri says doesn’t surprise him.
"I know Alex always appreciated everything that he had here at LSU", Maineri said. "He played his best in the big games when the spotlight was the greatest."
Bregman played at shortstop for the Tigers, but changed positions after joining the Astros in 2016. Maineri says Bregman is so talented, he could play any position he was asked to.
"If you could play shortstop you can play second, you can play third. If we put him in the outfield, he'd be a great outfielder. Alex is just a baseball player with tremendous ability. That ability is developed because of his great work ethic."
The Tigers coach says he stays in close contact with Bregman, especially during this post-season run. Maineri always assures him he is a great baseball player.
"You never try to calm him down, because there' s no such thing as calming Alex Bregman down. He lives life to the fullest. But what I keep telling him is that dude, you don't have to try any harder than you do everyday."
Bregman batted .284 this year with 19 home runs, hitting two more round trippers in the post season. Game 1 is tonight in Los Angeles with first pitch set for just after 7pm.
