Can decorating your home for Christmas really improve your mood? Psychologist with LSU Health New Orleans Dr. Michelle Moore says studies show it actually can. She says putting up lights or decorating your Christmas tree brings back happy childhood memories and typically gives people a better demeanor.
“The decorations are this reminder of the joyful holiday so when people are putting up the decorations, it helps relieve stress because it’s reminding them of these really happy moments from their life.”
Moore says there’s been a recent trend of families putting up Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving. She says it’s simply the act of putting up holiday décor that takes the mind off of everyday stresses.
“The kind of act of putting these decorations up. It’s something active that you’re doing so you’re not just thinking about it, you’re getting to see the transformation of your house happen.”
Moore says studies have shown that decorating the outside of your house for the holidays can bring neighbors together.
“And it can also have you come across as a friendlier person because you’re inviting people to enjoy the spirit of the holiday.”
