With Christmas right around the corner, the Louisiana SPCA encourages people to give the gift of a home to a pet in need through adoption. Spokesperson Alicia Haefele says they’re offering a $50 adoption special until December 23rd. She says last year 222 animals found forever homes during the holiday season.
“All of our adoptable animals that are six months and older are available for a reduced adoption fee. We still require the normal adoption procedure, we’ll still have the interview, make sure it’s a great match.”
Haefele says for an additional donation of $75, you can surprise a loved one with an adopted animal by getting it hand delivered on Christmas Eve, Hanukah or Kwanzaa.
“We will place your adopted animal with one of our trusted foster families. They will hold on to your animal for you, they’ll care for it until the date you want us to deliver it.”
Haefele says this service is available around the state. She says it’s important to make sure everyone adopting a pet understands it’s a life time commitment, not just a holiday gift.
“If the pet is for a child, you want to have some conversations beforehand around if you were to get a pet, what would you do to help take care of it? Would you walk it, feed it, brush it?”
