|Tropical Storm Chantal is continuing it's rapid westward track in the Atlantic today and is approaching the Leeward Islands. Computer forecasts predict the third storm of the hurricane season will turn north and weaken as it nears the Bahamas Friday. |
State Climatologist Barry Keim says there is a slight chance the system will enter the Gulf of Mexico, but in all likely hood it will go up the east coast of Florida, "Right now the western edge of the cone of error does take it into the Gulf, but the most likely track takes it up the east coast."
Keim says it is a concern, however, that we've already had three storms so early in the Hurricane season, "We're well ahead of schedule. It definitely suggests that this is gonna be a busy season."
