Governor John Bel Edwards is in Puerto Rico today along with leaders of the Louisiana National Guard and the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness to observe and give support to the island nation as it recovers from Hurricane Maria.

With Tropical Storm Cindy moving inland, the Louisiana National Guard wants residents to know they are ready if assistance is needed. Major General Glenn Curtis with the Louisiana National Guard says they have pre-staged 100 high water vehicles and 33 boats throughout the southern and central regions of the state. He says they have additional assets available if needed.

The Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness and the Louisiana National Guard are getting together with several key state agencies for an emergency response exercise on Saturday. GOHSEP spokesperson Mike Steele says this is an effort to see that everyone synchronizes response efforts the next time disaster strikes.

Nearly 300 airmen in the Louisiana National Guard are deploying to Europe, and a farewell ceremony is being held in their honor on Saturday in New Orleans. Maj. Jesse Hasenkampf says they’re sending 270 airmen and 12 F-15 fighter jets to the European Command.

The Louisiana National Guard says the bunker that exploded at Camp Minden operated the way it was designed to handle such a blast, as it contained and controlled the M6 propellant. Matt Harris with Louisiana State Police says no people or property were hurt in the explosion.

Franklinton Police are searching for a suspect or suspects who broke into 25 vehicles that belong to members of the Louisiana National Guard. Maj. Justin Brown says they believe the thieves hoped over a fence where the cars were parked, while the Guardsmen were training in Slidell.

The Louisiana National Guard says they’ve rescued over 4,200 citizens and 350 pets as they assist in flood fighting efforts. Guard spokesperson Colonel Pete Schneider says this is the biggest response to a flooding event the Guard has ever seen in Louisiana. He says their equipment has been a vital resource.

The Louisiana National Guard at Jackson Barracks in New Orleans opens a Desert Storm exhibit today to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the conflict. Louisiana National Guard Historian Rhett Breerwood says 16 of our guard’s units were mobilized and nine were sent to the war zone.

It's a timely gift for members of the Louisiana National Guard's 1023rd Engineer Company, as the unit returns Thursday from a 10-month deployment. Over 150 soldiers will arrive in Monroe on Christmas Eve, after spending much of 2015 in Kuwait. Ross Bethea is the Captain of the 1023rd Engineer Company.

The Louisiana National Guard Museum at Jackson Barracks will open a Desert Storm exhibit in February to mark the 25th anniversary and they’re seeking the help of current and former guardsmen. Museum Director Captain Heather Englehart says they’re searching for items to help tell the story of how the National Guard assisted in Operation Desert Storm.
