Minimum wage increase and equal pay legislation fails on Senate floor

Minimum wage increase, pay secrecy, and equal pay for women legislation all died on the Senate floor Tuesday night. The bills are a major part of Governor John Bel Edwards agenda.
 
New Orleans Senator Troy Carter's bill would have increased the minimum wage from the federal level of $7.25-per-hour to $8.00 in 2019 and $8.50 by 2020.

Minimum wage hike up for discussion on Senate floor today

A bill to raise the minimum wage will be up for a vote before the full senate today. The legislation would boost the minimum wage to 8.50 an hour by 2020, and was a campaign trial promise for Governor John Bel Edwards. Edwards says paying the current minimum wage just isn’t right.

Senate Labor Committee approves minimum wage and equal pay bills

Governor John Bel Edwards appeared before the Senate Finance committee this morning to support a bills that would raise the minimum wage, mandate equal pay for women, and allow employees to openly discuss pay with other employees without retribution. Edwards made a campaign promise that he would fight for better wages.

Governor John Bel Edwards kicked off the regular session today by laying out his legislative agenda, and tearing into lawmakers who failed to fix the fiscal cliff. The governor highlighted the plight of Louisiana’s highest performing students, who could begin to be poached by universities in other states with TOPS still up in the air. Edwards says right now Bama is beating us academically, and athletically.

Governor John Bel Edwards has several items he would like to accomplish in the 2018 regular legislative session when it convenes March 12th. Edwards will once again ask legislators to increase the minimum wage. 18 states increased their minimum wage January 1st. He says $7.25 an hour is not enough for hard working Louisiana families.

Gov. Edwards asks supporters if they back a higher minimum wage

Governor John Bel Edwards released an email poll asking if Louisiana residents support raising the minimum wage. ULM Political Science Professor Dr. Joshua Stockley says this survey is more about fundraising, as many of his supporters already want to increase the state’s minimum wage, which is $7.25.

Bill to raise minimum wage fails to pass out of Senate Finance Committee

A measure that would raise the minimum wage to $8 an hour beginning on July 1st of 2018 was killed by the Senate Finance Committee for a second consecutive year. The bill is by New Orleans Senator Troy Carter who says raising the minimum wage will benefit the state as a whole.

Senate committee approves proposed minimum wage increase

The Senate Labor Committee approves a proposal to increase the minimum wage to $8.50 over the next two years. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, and this measure would create a state minimum wage at $8.00 by 2018 and increase to $8.50 by 2019. State Director of the National Federation for Independent Business, Dawn Starns opposes the measure because she says it will create uncertainty for small businesses.
