The Orleans District Attorney’s office says they are disappointed Cardell Hayes was sentenced to 25 years behind bars for a fatal road rage shooting in New Orleans that left former Saints star Will Smith dead and his wife, Raquel, injured. Legal analyst Tim Meche believes Judge Camille Buras handed down a fair sentence.

Cardell Hayes, the man who shot and killed former Saints star Will Smith, will not receive a new trial. Orleans Parish Criminal District Court Judge Camille Buras rejected a motion for a new trial.

On Wednesday, Hayes attorneys had a man testify that he heard two different gunshots on the night Smith was killed, but testimony was reportedly bizarre and now Hayes is set to be sentenced on Friday.

After taking 5.5 hours to deliberate a 12-person jury found Cardell Hayes guilty of manslaughter in the shooting death of former Saints star Will Smith. Hayes was also found guilty of attempted manslaughter in the shooting of Racquel Smith, who was injured in the shooting that took place after a car accident in New Orleans on April 9th.

A recent discovery could change the whole dynamic of the Will Smith murder case. Police say a loaded 9mm gun was found in the former-Saints defensive end’s vehicle. Legal analyst Chick Foret says this could help alleged shooter Cardell Hayes’ defense that he was not the aggressor.
