Cold front brings in much needed dry, cool air

A significant cold front moved through the Bayou State leaving us with some much needed relief. State Climatologist Barry Keim says this front has brought in much cooler and drier Canadian air and pushed out the warm Gulf of Mexico air. He says the afternoon highs will be in the 70s in northern parishes and low 80s in the coastal zone.

It Has Been a Busy Hurricane Season

The formation of Tropical Storm Ophelia in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean makes it 15 named storms during this very active Atlantic hurricane season. State Climatologist Barry Keim says 2005, the year Katrina struck New Orleans, is still the highest recorded year for activity.

Forecasters say we could see a hurricane in the Gulf this weekend

The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Depression number 16 has formed in the southwestern Caribbean Sea and move into the Gulf of Mexico this weekend as Tropical Storm Nate. State Climatologist Barry Keim says the storm has the potential to strengthen into a hurricane.

Cold front could push Hurricane Irma away from Louisiana

Hurricane Irma is a Category 5 storm moving through the Caribbean, but state climatologist Barry Keim says Irma should be Florida’s problem, not Louisiana’s. He says a cold front will move over the state today and the timing could not be better for Louisiana, but it’s very unfortunate for Florida.

Rains continue from Tropical Storm Harvey

Tropical Storm Harvey continues to pour water down on Texas and Louisiana. State climatologist Barry Keim says the worst part is it’s not over yet, as much more rain is yet to come. He says 5 to 10 more inches of rain is still possible in Louisiana.

Today marks 12 years since Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana, and Texans are facing a similar situation now with Harvey. State climatologist Barry Keim says both made landfall as a major hurricane, but Katrina reached Category 5 strength in the Gulf and weakened, while Harvey continued to strengthen until landfall. He says that worsened Katrina’s storm surge.

Remnants of Tropical Storm Harvey expected to reform in Gulf of Mexico
