3 Louisiana police officers killed in line of duty so far this year

So far this year, 65 law enforcement officers have died in the line of duty, a 30 percent increase over the same period last year, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. President and CEO Craig Floyd says the leading cause of officer deaths is traffic fatalities.

It’s been a tough year for Louisiana law enforcement, as Louisiana was third in the nation for officers killed in the line of duty. President of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, Craig Floyd, says nationwide, 135 police officers were killed this year. He says firearms-related fatalities were the leading cause of on duty deaths.

Louisiana ranks second for the number of police officers killed in the line of duty this year, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. President and CEO, Craig Floyd, says seven Louisiana officers have been killed in the line of duty in 2016. He says we need to have more respect for our officers.

More police officers killed on duty in Louisiana than any other state in 2015

Louisiana lead the country in 2015 for the number of police officers who died while working. A report by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund revealed 9 total officers were killed in the line of duty this year, triple the number from 2014. Chairman Craig Floyd says five officers were shot and murdered while on the job in 2015.More

2013 saw a noticable decrease in the number of police officers killed in the line of duty. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund CEO Craig Floyd says there were 8% fewer fatalities than in 2012. Nationally, 111 lawmen died while on duty, compared to 118 in 2012.
