The Louisiana Association of Educators holds a rally this afternoon to show their support for Rene Rost middle school teacher Deyshia Hargrave. She was arrested Monday after criticizing a raise for the superintendent, while teacher’s wages have been stagnant for nearly a decade. Education leaders are letting teachers and students know what policy changes can be expected when they head back to class in August. Debbie Meaux, Louisiana Association of Educators President, says a new law was recently signed by the governor that would limit testing time, to 2% of a student’s learning time.

A redesign of how teachers are prepared to lead a classroom has been approved by BESE. It would require a one year apprenticeship for aspiring teachers before they can be certified. BESE President Jim Garvey says he supports this change because this will improve the ability of new teachers to hit the ground running on day one.

The US is facing a teacher shortage, and a new study from the Learning Policy Institute finds Louisiana ranks in the second lowest category for teacher attraction. President of the Louisiana Association of Educators, Debbie Meaux, says a lot of teachers are leaving the profession, and fewer people becoming teachers.

BESE unanimously approves a process that will be used to review the state's controversial Common Core academic standards. President Chas Roemer says the goal is to improve current standards where necessary instead of rewriting them. He says the key to this process is to make sure they have people who actual use Common Core participating.

The Louisiana Association of Educators has filed a lawsuit challenging the legality of using public school budget money to fund certain types of charter schools. $60 million from the budget, also known as the MFP, has been designated to fund those charter schools.
