7 years later, father remembers son killed on Deepwater Horizon

Today marks 7 years since an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig killed 11 people off the coast of Louisiana. Twenty-eight-year-old Gordon Jones was one of those. His father, Keith Jones, told Jim Engster on Talk Louisiana that dealing with the loss of his son isn’t any easier 7 years later.

Study finds widespread shoreline loss after oil spill

A USGS-NASA study found widespread shoreline loss across areas affected with oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill in 2010. Research Oceanographer Elijah Ramsey says they compared the damage before and after the spill in the Barataria Bay area.

He says in 2009 and 2010 there wasn’t a lot of coastline erosion.

Researchers release study on effect of BP oil spill on coastal marshes

Deepwater Horizon was a success at the box office this weekend and just in time for the release of the movie is a new study looking at how coastal marshland recovered from the 2010 environmental disaster. Marine conservation biology professor at Duke University, Brian Silliman, says patches of marsh grass nearly covered by oil never recovered.

Deepwater Horizon film premieres in theaters

The Deepwater Horizon movie premieres in theaters today and shows the story of the lives lost during the 2010 rig explosion off the coast of Louisiana. Lt Governor Billy Nungesser was the president of Plaquemines Parish when 11 crew members were killed in the worst offshore oil disaster in U.S. history and he says this movie accurately portrayed what went on during the blast.

Another Louisiana shot film is released today but movie production is slowing

The Louisiana filmed movie, Free State of Jones, starring Matthew McConaughey comes out in theaters today. Executive Director of Celtic Studios Patrick Mulhearn says the movie revolves around a Mississippi farmer who tries to secede from the Confederacy. He says the movie is set during the Civil War and was filmed in 10 different Louisiana parishes.

BP settlement finalized

Louisiana's landmark $6.8 billion settlement with BP over the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster has been finalized.  This clears the way for the state to begin receiving billions of dollars for coastal restoration and economic recovery.

Deepwater Horizon documentary airs tonight on LPB

Today marks the fifth anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon explosion and a documentary filmmaker says the event and aftermath are still affecting people who were involved.  Margaret Brown, director and producer of the documentary "The Great Invisible", says it was difficult to hear stories from workers on the rig who are still suffering from nightmares and PTSD.

National Wildlife Federation looks at Gulf oil spill impact 5 years later

A report from the National Wildlife Federation provides evidence that sea turtles, dolphins, fish and birds are still suffering from the BP oill spill that occurred nearly five years ago. Lead author of the report, Ryan Fikes, says the number of Kemp's ridley sea turtle nests have declined on average since 2010.

Casting call for oil rig workers, merchant marines, and Coast Guard

Central Casting Louisiana is looking for people with oil rig, merchant marine, and Coast Guard experience to work on the upcoming feature film, "Deepwater Horizon".  Director of Casting, Adam Hochfeld, says this movie is based on the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion.
