The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is deploying employees and coordinating assistance from other state agencies for Hurricane Irma and Harvey response and recovery efforts. GOHSEP spokesman Mike Steele says there is a wide range of needs in Florida and Georgia, and ongoing cleanup in Texas.

Key state groups taking part in emergency response exercise Saturday

The Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness and the Louisiana National Guard are getting together with several key state agencies for an emergency response exercise on Saturday. GOHSEP spokesperson Mike Steele says this is an effort to see that everyone synchronizes response efforts the next time disaster strikes.

Emergency planners have learned valuable lessons since Katrina

The director of the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness says the state is in a better position to respond to a Hurricane Katrina like event. GOHSEP director Kevin Davis says one of the biggest advancements is a better relationship between the state and FEMA. Davis says he meets with the FEMA regional director on a regular basis.

The Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is keeping an eye on Tropical Storm Danny in the Atlantic as it moves toward the Caribbean. GOHSEP Director Kevin Davis says the storm is expected to reach hurricane strength later this week.

Hurricane season begins today

Today is the start of the 2015 Hurricane Season and even though forecasters are calling for a below average season, state officials are urging you to get prepared for a storm now. Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness spokesman Mike Steele says their message every year is "Get a Game Plan."

State officials urge the public to prepare for Hurricane Season

State officials want you to take time this week preparing for the upcoming hurricane season. Governor Bobby Jindal has declared it, Hurricane Preparedness Week, and Chris Guilbeaux, a deputy director at the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness says visiting Getagamplan.org is a good first step.

Louisiana 911 operators to screen callers for Ebola symptoms

A new protocol has been implemented to 911 operators in Louisiana which has them screen callers for Ebola symptoms. Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Director Kevin Davis says the caller will be asked a series of questions about illnesses, particularly fever and recent travel. He says that will help EMS responding.
