Early voting numbers for the Secretary of State’s election run-off set for December 8th is off to a rough start, with a huge drop off relative to the historic participation levels in the last mid-term. JMC Analytics Pollster John Couvillon says early voting numbers are down compared to the 2016 Senate run-off.

Early voting begins Saturday at 8:30 AM for the December 8th election, which features the secretary of state’s runoff race. Early voting will continue, except on Sunday, through December 1st. Voter turnout for the November 6th election was just over 50%. But pollster John Couvillon of JMC Analytics expects a much lower turnout for this election.

Early voting ended yesterday and as of Tuesday night 307,000 people voted in person or with a mail in ballot, which JMC Analytics pollster John Couvillon says is a record for a non-Presidential election.
Couvillon says even though the Louisiana ballot lacks a marquee race, voters are aware of the November 6th election, because of hotly contested midterm elections elsewhere.

Analyst: Over 100,000 early votes already for the midterm election

According to one pollster, early voting numbers are strong for the midterm election in Louisiana. JMC Analytics publisher John Couvillon says we haven't seen midterm participation like this since 2006.

“We have now crossed the 100,000 mark which is pretty good for a midterm election cycle where you don’t have any heavily contested races.”

Pollster: National attention on mid-term elections may boost turnout in Louisiana

With no hot races in Louisiana, a low voter turnout is expected for the November 6th election, but a pollster disagrees.

JMC Analytics Publisher John Couvillon believes turnout could near 30% despite a lack of competitive Congressional races, because of the national political climate.

Pollster John Couvillon says a Democrat leading a red state isn’t surprising, considering there are five republicans running.

Poll: State Treasurer's Race wide open

A poll on the State Treasurer's race finds it to be a wide open contest. The October 14th election features three well-funded Republicans, Angele Davis, Neil Riser and John Schroder. JMC Analytics pollster John Couvillon says the GOP candidates are polling in the high single digits.
"None of the three major announced Republicans in that race show any signs of early front-runner status," Couvillon said.

Low early voting turnout

Only 171,000 of the state’s 3 million registered voters cast their ballots during the early voting period. Pollster John Couvillion, with JMC Analytics, predicts turnout for the runoff to be 35%, at the most. He says a runoff during the holiday season has always been bad for turnout, plus this Senate race isn’t exciting voters.

Early voting is over and Louisiana saw a record number of voters during the one week period. As of Monday, 427,000 people went to cast their votes ahead of the actual Election Day. John Couvillon with JMC Analytics says 89% of those who voted early, are individuals who normally do vote when there’s an election.
