Louisiana ranks third in the country for lightning claims, according to State Farm. Roszell Gadson with State Farm says in 2015, the insurance company paid out over $6 million on almost 1,400 lightning claims, averaging $4,600 each.

A report by Yahoo says Louisiana has the second most lightning strikes a year in the country. Louisiana trails Florida but is just ahead of Mississippi. State Climatologist Barry Keim says we average about 827,000 strikes a year and lightning has caused 142 fatalities since 1959, or about 2.5 deaths a year.More

This week is National Lightning Safety Week. Louisiana ranks third among all states in lightning strike damage and insurance claims according to State Farm. Spokesperson Gary Stephenson says the most damage comes from powerful electrical surges into the home.

|A woman in Houma got the shock of her life Monday afternoon when she was struck by lighting while checking out at Rouses. Houma Police Chief Todd Duplantis says it happened during a big storm around 2pm yesterday. He says officers arrived at the store and discovered a woman had been struck by lightning.|

Louisiana ranks second in the country for insurance claims related to lightning strikes. That's according to State Farm. Spokesperson Gary Stephenson says they paid 9-million dollars out in 2012 for nearly 2,000 lightning related claims.
