Report finds Louisiana is 3rd for the rate of women murdered by men

Once again Louisiana ranks in the top five for the rate of women who are murdered by men. The Violence Policy Center looked at the latest data available, which is 2015, and found the rate in Louisiana is double the national average and the Bayou State has the third highest rating in the country.

Expanded domestic violence laws protect more victims

More victims are now covered under Louisiana’s domestic violence laws. Two laws take effect today that expand the statutes to include same-sax couples and dating partners. Executive Director of the Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence Mariah Wineski says this extends legal protections to more victims.

Bills seeking to close loopholes in domestic violence laws win final passage

Two bills are heading to the Governor’s desk that seek to close loopholes in Louisiana’s domestic violence laws. One measure by New Orleans Representative Helena Moreno adds dating partners to the laws. Interim executive director of the Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Mariah Wineski, says current laws don’t offer the same protections to couples who do not have children or live together. She says these victims need protection under the law.

Louisiana receives grant to help domestic violence victims achieve financial stability

The Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence has received a grant from the Allstate Foundation to set up Financial Empowerment Programs in Acadiana and Central Louisiana. Coalition interim executive director Mariah Wineski says financial abuse occurs in 99% of domestic violence cases.

LA Domestic Violence Coalition warns against telling abused women to arm themselves

The Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence is warning against telling women to arm themselves as a form of protection from abuse. In response to the recent Geismar murder of Monica Johnson allegedly at the hands of her estranged husband, some have advocated that battered women get guns.
