LDWF: 'Roadkill' spotted in cooler at Winnsboro restaurant; citation issued for possession of a spotted fawn

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says a Winnsboro man had roadkill in the cooler of his restaurant and then took it home to butcher it. 61-year-old Somchanh Chanthapanya was cited for possession of a spotted fawn.
 
"Apparently it was hit on a highway close to the restaurant and it was road kill and he thought it would be a good idea to pick it up and clean it for later," said Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries spokesperson Adam Einck.

Pointe Coupee Parish man must pay $10,250 for illegally killing a Louisiana black bear

A Pointe Coupee Parish man is ordered to pay $10,250 in civil restitution after being found guilty of killing a Louisiana black bear. 30-year-old Robert Kimble of Lettsworth shot and killed a female bear on Yancy Wildlife Management Area in Concordia Parish last November. General Counsel of Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Yolanda Martin says why she demanded the restitution.

LDWF charge two men for alleged Louisiana Black Bear violations in St. Mary Parish

Two Louisiana men have been cited for alleged Louisiana Black Bear violations in St. Mary Parish on November 12th, 2017. Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries spokesperson Adam Einck says they received a tip of the violation in early April of this year and obtained a search warrant.

LDWF organizes free fishing weekend

The State Department of Wildlife and Fisheries seeks to get more people outdoors with a free fishing weekend. So Saturday and Sunday residents and visitors can fish Louisiana waters without an otherwise required fishing license. LDWF Spokesperson Rene LeBreton says they hope to attract new anglers.

“So just a chance to introduce people to the sport of fishing. You know to just try and get them hooked.”

Girl Scout troop rescued by LDWF agents in Natchitoches Parish

A Texas Girl Scout group is safe after being rescued from Saline Bayou In Natchitoches Parish. Adam Einck with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says they received an alert from friends and family around 9pm on May 28th that a kayaking group of three adults and six juveniles had never returned to their destination.

LDWF audit finds not everything on up and up in previous administration's spending

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Secretary Charlie Melancon says he’s ordered a complete internal review of his agency after an audit found questionable spending, among other things, under the previous administration. He says they are going to take the audit and review whether or not rules or policies need to be changed.

You can fish without a license this weekend

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is holding free recreational fishing days on Saturday and Sunday. This means both Louisiana residents and non-residents can fish without a license in public waters. LDWF biologist Meghan Macmenamin says the goal is to get new anglers out on the water.

LDWF is looking for new cadets for September academy

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is looking for new field agents, and they are taking applications for up to 23 cadets. LDWF spokesman Adam Einck says the academy is starting in September.

Red snapper season opens today until further notice

The red snapper fishing season opens today and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has extended the limit from three to nine miles offshore for recreational fishing. 11 new whooping cranes to be released into the wild

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has received 11 young whooping cranes to be released at White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area. Spokesperson Bo Boehringer says the population will increase to 46 with the addition of 8 females and 3 males. He says they’re working to create a flock that is able to survive in the wild.
