|Governor Edwards has declared a State of Emergency for several Parishes along the Mississippi, Ouachita and Red Rivers. Flood watches and warnings remain in effect through Thursday afternoon as an additional two to four inches of rainfall is expected. GOHSEP spokesman Mike Steele says persons living near those areas need to remain alert.

Governor John Bel Edwards is sending over 300 Louisiana National Guard soldiers to Puerto Rico to assist the island nation as it deals with catastrophic devastation from Hurricane Maria. Mike Steele, with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, says two separate units will spend a month in Puerto Rico.

The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is deploying employees and coordinating assistance from other state agencies for Hurricane Irma and Harvey response and recovery efforts. GOHSEP spokesman Mike Steele says there is a wide range of needs in Florida and Georgia, and ongoing cleanup in Texas.

State Officials got together today to discuss Louisiana’s response plan should another storm hit us while portions of the Gulf Coast region are still recovering from prior events. Mike Steele with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness says we are still in the heart of hurricane season, and resources in Louisiana could be strained.

Tropical storm conditions are expected to reach the state late today as a disturbance in the central Gulf of Mexico becomes better organized. Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness spokesperson Mike Steele says heavy rains and flash flooding are the biggest threat.

The cleanup continues today after the Governor’s Office estimates at least 7 tornadoes touched down in southeast Louisiana on Tuesday. Mike Steele with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness says the state is very lucky that no one was killed.

An Affordable Housing Expo will be held in Baton Rouge this weekend for flood victims. Mike Steele with GOHSEP says there are people at different stages of recovery, so there will be a variety of housing options on display. He says people can come see manufactured and modular homes, park trailers and pre-fab housing.

The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness announces more than 1,000 flood victims have had their homes repaired as part of the Shelter At Home program. GOHSEP spokesperson Mike Steele says this is a huge milestone for the program.
