The nation observes its 47th federally recognized Memorial Day today. The tradition memorializes those who died while serving in the US Military.
Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs spokesperson Alex Juan is asking people to keep in mind what that means for Gold Star Families who have lost a loved one in service.

AAA projects the number of expected travelers for this Memorial Day weekend will be the highest it's been since 2005. Spokesman Don Redman says they project 39.3 million Americans are taking to the roads, skies, rails and water, which is a million more than last year.
Redman credits an improving economy.

Grillers are in luck as there is plenty of beef to cook up this Memorial Day weekend. CEO of the Cattle Producers of Louisiana Dave Foster says beef was sold to retailers at a lower price compared to previous years and so consumers should see some good deals out there.

AAA expects over 38 million Americans will travel over the Memorial Day weekend, the highest number of travelers since 2005. Spokesperson Don Redman says it’s due to low gas prices, which are currently around $2.10 a gallon for regular gasoline. He says these are the lowest gas prices we’ve seen in 11 years.

As we approach a big travel weekend, motorists can expect to see prices at the pump up more than 6 cents from the prior week. Senior Petroleum Analyst Gregg Laskoski from GasBuddy.com says they've got the current statewide average for a gallon of regular at about $2.06.

Memorial Day is one of the most solemn holidays on the calendar. It's a day set aside to remember those men and women who gave their lives in defense of our freedom. Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs, David LeCerte, says the United States has sending young men and women off to fight for our nation since 1775.

Many will be firing up the grill this Memorial Day and LSU AgCenter Economist Ross Pruitt says you can expect to continue to pay high prices for beef. According to figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average price for a pound of ground beef in March was $4.20, up almost 14-percent from 2014.

As motorists begin hitting the road for the Memorial Day weekend, Gasbuddy-dot-com says they'll see the lowest gas prices since 2009. Senior Petroleum Analyst Gregg Laskoski says the current average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Louisiana is $2.45 a gallon.
