A bill barring drivers from touching their cell phones while on the road narrowly escaped the House and is on its way to the Senate. The anti-distracted driving legislation was inspired by the uptick in distracted driving road deaths in recent years. Bill sponsor Breaux Bridge Representative Mike Huval says the legislation is about protecting the next generation of drivers.

A bill to ban drivers from using their phone with their hands while on the road failed to pass the House floor after an, at times, contentious debate. The legislation by Breaux Bridge Representative Mike Huval was inspired by the traffic deaths of a constituent’s child. Huval says it’s a bill designed to save lives.

House Transportation committee halts legislation to ban hand-held cell phone use by drivers

The House transportation committee put the brakes on a proposal that would ban the use of a hand held cell phone while driving. Breaux Bridge Representative Mike Huval wanted to make it a secondary offense, if a driver used a hand-held cell phone. But there was strong opposition from committee members.

Once again lawmakers will discuss banning the use of hand held cell phones while driving. A bill to do just that will be debated in the House Transportation Committee today. Breaux Bridge Representative Mike Huval says representatives for the insurance industry are in support of this proposal.

State unveils new "Cajun and Proud" specialty plate

The state has unveiled its new "I'm Cajun...and Proud" specialty license plates. Breaux Bridge Rep. Mike Huval sponsored the legislation last Spring that created the plates. He says the plates' design simply smacks of Acadiana, the familar fleur-de-lis and a Cajun crawfish playing an accordion.
