GOHSEP sending crews to help with hurricane response in Florida, Georgia and Texas

The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is deploying employees and coordinating assistance from other state agencies for Hurricane Irma and Harvey response and recovery efforts. GOHSEP spokesman Mike Steele says there is a wide range of needs in Florida and Georgia, and ongoing cleanup in Texas.

State Officials got together today to discuss Louisiana’s response plan should another storm hit us while portions of the Gulf Coast region are still recovering from prior events. Mike Steele with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness says we are still in the heart of hurricane season, and resources in Louisiana could be strained.

GOHSEP prepares for potential flash flooding

Tropical storm conditions are expected to reach the state late today as a disturbance in the central Gulf of Mexico becomes better organized. Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness spokesperson Mike Steele says heavy rains and flash flooding are the biggest threat.

Cleanup, damage assessment underway after tornadoes ravage south Louisiana

The cleanup continues today after the Governor’s Office estimates at least 7 tornadoes touched down in southeast Louisiana on Tuesday. Mike Steele with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness says the state is very lucky that no one was killed.

Affordable Housing Expo for flood victims this weekend

An Affordable Housing Expo will be held in Baton Rouge this weekend for flood victims. Mike Steele with GOHSEP says there are people at different stages of recovery, so there will be a variety of housing options on display. He says people can come see manufactured and modular homes, park trailers and pre-fab housing.

More than 1,000 homes repaired in Shelter At Home program

Debris still lines roadways five weeks after flood

Five weeks after the historic flooding in south Louisiana, many people still have debris piled up in their front yards. Spokesperson for the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, Mike Steele, says crews have hit the 55% mark for completion of debris removal.

Disaster warehouse set up on Celtic Studio property

Celtic Studios in Baton Rouge was a shelter for displaced flood victims and now one of the movie studios properties has become a multi-agency disaster warehouse. Mike Steele with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness says people making large donations should call ahead of time to make sure that someone is there to help unload.
