Two years ago today in Baton Rouge, a lone gunman opened fire on law enforcement in an ambush that would kill three officers and injured three others. East Baton Rouge Sheriff Sid Gautreaux says it goes down as one of the worst days in Louisiana’s history.

East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff Sid Gautreaux says the Baton Rouge police ambush a year ago today was a turning point for our community. Gautreaux says he was in Lake Charles when he received a phone call telling him his officers were shot. He says he raced back to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital where he learned three officers had lost their lives.

East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore gave an extensive review of what happened last July when a gunman ambushed Baton Rouge Police officers, killing three and wounding three. Moore provided the public with the shooter's suicide note. He says its clear Gavin Long came to Baton Rouge to inflict pain on police officers.

The final of the three Baton Rouge law enforcement officers slain in an ambush on cops was laid to rest Monday. Thousands turned out for the funeral of BRPD's Corporal Montrell Jackson, a 32-year-old 10-year veteran of the department who leaves behind a wife and baby boy, Mason. Governor John Bel Edwards says we have to make this world a better place for Mason.

A tearful goodbye was given today to the first of three law enforcement officers killed on Sunday’s police ambush. Thousands attended the funeral service of Baton Rouge Police Officer Matthew Gerald. Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden spoke and said it’s time for the community to come together. He says we need to put aside our differences and start to understand respect.

Autopsy: Law enforcement officers died of multiple gun shot wounds

The autopsy findings of the three officers killed in the police ambush by Gavin Long have been released. East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner Dr. Beau Clark says each officer’s death was ruled a homicide due to multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers killed in ambush are remembered as heroes

The three law enforcement officers killed in Sunday’s ambush attack in Baton Rouge are being remembered today as heroes. Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie says Office Matthew Gerald was a devoted husband and father of two and joined the Baton Rouge Police Department in March. Dabadie says Gerald also served in the Marine Corp, the Army, and served three tours in Iraq.

Friends and family of fallen officers say this is all like a bad dream

Friends and family members of the Louisiana law enforcement officers who lost their lives in an ambush on cops are devastated today as they mourn their loved ones. David St. Romain is a local singer in Baton Rouge, and good friends with fallen Deputy Brad Garafola. Romain says Deputy Garafola was the school resource officer at Woodlawn High when he was a student there.

Sheriff: All six police officers shot have families

The Baton Rouge police shooting came two days after the funeral of Alton Sterling, a 37-year-old black man fatally shot during a confrontation with two white police officers. The shooting of Sterling set off a series of protests seeking justice. Governor John Bel Edwards says Baton Rouge is hurting, but more violence is not the answer.
