Regular legislative session off to a slow start

Three weeks into the regular legislative session and things are still moving slow. The biggest piece of legislation so far has been the minimum wage bill clearing the Senate Labor Committee. Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat says legislators were burnt out after a tough special session.

Should public school kids be required to wear a uniform?

A bill to be heard in front of the House Education Committee today would prohibit public school boards from requiring school uniforms. Author of the legislation, Hammond Rep. Chris Broadwater, says this came after he conducted a project with Hammond fourth graders to come up with different bills. He says he invited the children to the capitol to vote on their proposed legislation.

Proposed legislation would allow pets to be buried with owners

A proposed bill for the current regular legislative session would allow pet owners to have their deceased pets buried alongside them in a human graveyard. Author of the legislation, Metairie Senator Conrad Appel, says currently it’s illegal in Louisiana. He says he was approached by a veterinarian who suggested creating a law because many people have strong connections with their cats and dogs.

North Louisiana lawmaker proposes the Pastor Protection Act

A bill has been introduced in the current regular legislative session to allow a religious organization or clergy member to refuse participation in a same sex marriage. Author of the Pastor Protection Act, Bossier City Representative Mike Johnson, says the bill simply protects an individual’s religious belief.

Proposed legislation would increase wait time for an abortion

A bill to be discussed in regular session would increase the mandatory waiting period to receive an abortion from 24 hours to 72 hours. Author of the legislation, Republican West Monroe Representative Frank Hoffmann, says the extension would give a woman the opportunity to think through the process.

Gov. Edwards pushes higher minimum wage, Medicare expansion and education reform

Governor John Bel Edwards spoke in front of lawmakers today as the regular legislative session is now underway. Edwards is moving forward with the expansion of Medicaid, proposing a higher minimum wage, and reforming public education. He says he wants to ensure the working poor have access to affordable healthcare and with the expansion the state will save 100 million dollars.

Lawmaker asks Governor Edwards to look at state contracts with the Saints and Pelicans

Colfax Representative Terry Brown has filed legislation for the regular session that would require the governor to look over Louisiana’s agreements with the Saints and Pelicans and allow him to renegotiate the contracts to reduce state subsidies. Brown says if we’re cutting public dollars for developmentally disabled children and roadways, state-funding for professional sports teams should be reduced.
