|The State Transportation Department will soon begin work on the I-10 bridge in Lake Charles. DOTD spokesperson Rodney Mallett says they will replace the expansion joints on the bridge starting March 3rd, initially closing one eastbound lane. The bridge is nearly 60 years old. He says this work on I-10 is part of a large scale job they plan to perform. |

Needless to say the icy road conditions are something Louisianians are not familiar with, but there are still motorists out who are required to be at work. State Police Senior Trooper Bryan Lee says based on the number of crashes they saw in a short period of time this morning, plenty of people can't handle a vehicle on the ice. Interstate 10 East between Sorrento and Gramercy will be closed again this weekend to repair the on ramp bridge connecting U.S. 61 and I-10. The closure begins at 9 p.m. tonight and is set to reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday. Rodney Mallett with the state Department of Transportation advises motorists to be prepared to have an alternate route if traveling to New Orleans.

If you’re heading to New Orleans this weekend, be aware Interstate 10 East between the Sorrento and Gramercy exits will be closed as crews will install a repaired on-ramp bridge. Rodney Mallett with the state Department of Transportation says it's the same ramp that was removed for repairs in March.

There is no delay in plans to move forward with the construction of a four lane bridge and converting the current Jimmie Davis Bridge into a pedestrian cross over in Shreveport and Bossier City. That’s the word from DOTD Spokesperson Rodney Mallett who says there was some confusion, as the original proposal was to rehab the original bridge.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation launches a railroad safety campaign. Based on the latest numbers from the Federal Railroad Administration, Louisiana was fourth in the nation for the number of highway-rail grade crossing fatalities in 2015, with 13 deaths. DOTD Spokesperson Rodney Mallett says the message of their campaign is do not stop on the tracks.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation has launched a campaign to promote roundabout safety. DOTD Spokesperson Rodney Mallett says roundabouts are a one-way circular intersection designed to improve safety and efficiency. He says in the months following the installation of a roundabout, they receive a lot of positive feedback.

The Department of Transportation announces upgrades to their 511 travel information system. Rodney Mallett with DOTD says motorists can now get personalized traffic updates by creating an account at 511LA.org and the system can alert of any traffic disruptions.

Governor John Bel Edwards and other state and local officials cut the ribbon today on the Curtis Coleman Memorial Bridge over the Red River in Rapides Parish. Rodney Mallett with the Department of Transportation says this new bridge will benefit all drivers in Cenla.

The Jimmy Davis Bridge in Shreveport-Bossier City will not get its planned renovation anytime soon because the construction contract has been terminated. Department of Transportation spokesperson Rodney Mallett says the plan has been halted because of a protected species of bird that’s nesting on the bridge.
