Bill to teach litter education grade school passes out of House Committee

A measure that would require public schools to teach litter prevention and awareness to students from kindergarten to fifth grade passed out of the House Education Committee. Executive Director of Keep Louisiana Beautiful Susan Russell spoke in support of the bill and says educating young children on litter will give them the tools to become good environmental stewards.

Plan to provide schools with high speed internet scrapped

A plan to provide all Louisiana school districts with high speed internet has been scrapped. Executive Director of the Louisiana School Boards Association, Scott Richard says districts were given a short time period to commit to a plan with very little information from the Board of Regents. He says every school district wants to have high speed internet access, but funding uncertainties caused many to be hesitant.

State funding for public schools is at a standstill, as the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education approves a proposal that does not increase state funding per student. First Lady Donna Edwards urging donations for flood damaged schools

First Lady Donna Edwards is working with the Louisiana School Board Association to assist flood damaged schools with repairs and supplies. LSBA Executive Director Scott Richard says at this point, about 20 schools were severely damaged during the rainstorm.

Over a dozen school districts pass resolutions seeking waivers from Common Core opt outs

Over a dozen Louisiana public school districts have passed resolutions that ask the state not to enforce penalities for students who decide not take to the Common Core standardized tests. Louisiana School Boards Association executive director Scott Richard says as it stands now, school systems will receive a "zero" for every student who opts out.

School systems struggle to find substitutes

Public school superintendents in Louisiana are having difficulties finding part-time and substitute teachers as a result of the Affordable Care Act.  Scott Richard, Executive Director of the Louisiana School Boards Association, says work restrictions within the ACA, limiting part-time workers to 30 hours a week, is a real problem.

Louisiana teachers still retiring at a high rate

Louisiana schools are still seeing a higher number of teachers retiring compared to what they saw three years ago. Nearly three-thousand K-through-12th grade teachers retired during the fiscal year that ended June 30th. Scott Richard, director of the Louisiana School Board Association, blames it on the turmoil that's ongoing in public education.

BESE to discuss changes to slow down Common Core

The state Board of Elementary & Secondary Education will meet today to consider a slow-down of implementing more stringent performance standards for schools, teachers and students known as Common Core. Scott Richard is Executive Director of the Louisiana School Boards
Association. He says LSBA will speak against Common Core, which he calls a "train wreck."
