Fantasy sports wagering hanging in the balance on the ballot

When voters head to the polls today, they will see the question asking if fantasy sports betting should be legalized in their parish. Not everyone is on board with the idea of legalization. President of the Louisiana Family Forum Gene Mills said fantasy sports betting could result in a domino effect that sees the integrity of sports put at stake.

Mississippi reeling in sports betting dollars

Mississippi says they pulled in $660,000 in revenue from legalized sports betting in just the first month of casino operators taking bets.

Metairie Senator Danny Martiny authored legislation defeated this year that attempted to begin the process of legalizing sports betting in Louisana. Martiny says Mississippi's initial revenue haul is not huge, but it could indicate a larger problem for the Bayou State casinos.

Sports betting kicks off in other states, Louisiana still on the sidelines

Sports betting is off to the races in dozens of states across the nation, but so far Louisiana has sat on the sidelines while neighboring states like Mississippi have elected to receive the expansion. Louisiana Gaming Control Board Chairman Ronnie Jones says after seeing how other states have started using the new cash, he’s concerned the Bayou State may be losing on crucial revenue.

Two Mississippi casinos begin taking sports bets

Louisiana residents can go to Mississippi to place bets on sporting events starting today. The initial casinos to offer sports betting are Beau Rivage in Biloxi and Gold Strike in Tunica. Executive Director of the Mississippi Gaming and Hospitality Association, Larry Gregory, says the state is thrilled about the opportunities sports betting brings.

Governor Edwards addresses U.S. Supreme Court decision on sports betting on monthly talk show

Governor John Bel Edwards addressed the recent US Supreme Court decision to allow sports betting outside of Nevada on his monthly talk radio show. 32 states have legislation in place to allow the activities, including Mississippi, but Louisiana shot down similar legislation this session. Edwards didn’t oppose the idea.

Gaming Control Board Chair comments on sports betting in Louisiana

Dozens of states, including Mississippi, have passed legislation that will allow them to permit sports gaming in the wake of a US Supreme Court decision to allow it outside of Nevada, but Louisiana currently is not one of them. This year’s sports gaming bill was shot down in the legislature. But, Gaming Control Board Chairman Ronnie Jones says that could change next year.

Sports betting off the books for the foreseeable future

Sports betting will not be legal in Louisiana anytime soon as a push to allow parishes to vote on allowing it in casinos was shot down six to three in Senate Finance. Metairie Senator Danny Martiny, the bill’s sponsor, says if the US Supreme Court expands sports gaming nationwide, Louisiana could lose out on a lot of tourism to its neighbors.

Sports betting bill approved by a Senate committee

A bill to allow sports book gaming has cleared a Senate committee. Senate Judiciary “B” passed Metairie Senator Danny Martiny’s bill, which allows sports book wagering in any facility that has gaming, including video poker.
