Creepy clown trend reaches Louisiana

Around the country there have been many sightings of creepy clowns and now the trend has reached Louisiana. Covington Police Chief Tim Lentz says a group of elementary aged students claimed to see clowns in the woods behind their school. He says it turned out to be a hoax after the kids saw stories online, but authorities are taking incidents like this very seriously.

Sandbagging efforts underway as St. James Parish prepares for backwater flooding

The flooding is not over yet as officials in St. James Parish are preparing for backwater flooding. Parish President Timmy Roussel says the levels of water in the Blind River are higher than what was seen during Hurricane Isaac. He says residents are scrambling to sandbag their homes before the water reaches it.

No injuries reported in St. James Parish refinery fire

Crews responded to the scene of a fire at the Motiva Oil Refinery in St. James Parish this morning near the Sunshine Bridge. Flames can be seen for miles from the Convent facility. Jywanna Octave with the St. James Office of Emergency Preparedness says two fire departments responded.

Cleanup underway after deadly tornadoes ripped through south Louisiana

Cleanup is underway in several south Louisiana parishes after eight tornadoes touched down during a powerful storm system that roared through the state Tuesday. St. James spokesperson Brandon Keller says two people were killed when one of twisters leveled an RV park in Convent.

Bonfires to be lit tonight in St. James Parish

Tonight, the annual Bonfires on the Levee celebration takes place in St. James Parish.  The fires are scheduled to be lit at 7PM to light the way for Papa Noel.

St. James refinery admits to the release of mercury without permit

Noranda Alumina in St. James Parish is asking the state department of environmental quality for permission to release mercury into the air, after learning they may have been doing so without a permit since they began operations in 1959. DEQ spokesperson Greg Langley says the refinery could be fined for releasing mercury without a permit.

Annual St. James bonfires will light the sky tonight

The annual Bonfires on the Levee takes place tonight in St. James Parish.  Rhonda Lee, President of the Festival of the Bonfires, says this is a tradition in the parish dating back more than 100 years.

Cause of Talaija Dorsey's death remains a mystery

Authorities in St. James Parish say we may never know how 12-year-old Talaija Dorsey died. Sheriff Willy Martin says he spoke with the coroner after the autopsy and was told that an exact cause of death has not been established.
