The Shrimp and Petroleum Festival kicks off in Morgan City

The oldest chartered harvest festival in the Bayou State is underway in St. Mary Parish. Morgan City hosts the Shrimp and Petroleum Festival every year to recognize some of their economic staples.

Director of the Shrimp and Petroleum Festival Darby Radcliffe says the festival began in 1936 after an historic fishing day.

The family of the St. Mary Parish man who lost his pregnant wife and one-year-old child to a suspected drunk driver is fundraising to help pay for the expenses related to the tragedy that shocked the family, and community.

Louisiana remembers Hurricane Andrew 25 years later

Twenty-five years ago today one of the most destructive hurricanes in U.S. history made landfall in Florida and then crossed the Gulf of Mexico and made landfall near Morgan City. Former WAFB Meteorologist Mike Graham was working at the Baton Rouge TV station and remembers the anxiety as the storm took aim on Louisiana.

LSP: St. Mary Parish Deputy shot and injured in Ashton

A St. Mary Parish Deputy was shot and injured while responding to an incident in Ashton, and State Police are leading the investigation. Master Trooper Brooks David say the deputies were responding to a scene of a possible shooting where they located a male subject who was injured. He says a SWAT team moved in when the suspect started shooting again.

State Police say 5-year-old chasing dog in road was struck and killed in St. Mary Parish

State Police say a 5-year-old child was struck and killed by a passing vehicle on LA 83 in St. Mary Parish. Master Trooper Brooks David said the child was outside chasing his dog when the animal ran into the road.

Family found safe sheltering in house boat after being missing 36 hours

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's office says a family who did not return from a boating trip over the weekend was found safe late last night. Spokeswoman Traci Landry says they received word that Peter and Jennifer Orlando and their two children ages 12 and 15, didn't come back to their landing in Berwick as expected after a fishing trip.

Lafayette High Baseball coach sharing story about fatal crash involving the team's school bus

The Lafayette High Baseball coach describes the horrific accident that took place in St. Mary Parish Saturday that claimed the life of four people in an SUV that crashed into the school bus he and the players were traveling in. Coach Sam Taulli Jr. says one of the players sustained two crack vertebrae as a result of the crash.

UPDATE: Four people killed in school bus crash in south Louisiana

(State Police have corrected the age of one of the victims in the crash. The children deceased were 16-years-old, 14-years-old and 6-years-old. Correction made below.)

Four people riding in an SUV were killed in a crash involving a school bus on US 90 near LA Highway 317 in St. Mary Parish. 

The accident happened just before noon on Saturday. State Police say an SUV driven by 36-year-old Ladonna Cheatham of Patterson crossed the median, after the vehicle's left rear tire blew out and struck a Lafayette Parish School bus.

Major employer leaving St. Mary Parish

McDermott International has announced it will close its Morgan City fabrication facility and marine base, which is located in Amelia. The yard will be shuttered late this year or early next year. St. Mary Parish President Paul Naquin Junior says about 500 people work at the facility.
