House fire dangers increase during first winter cold snap

You may be thinking about using heaters and fireplaces to keep you warm now that winter weather has arrived. The chances for house fires increases, especially if proper precautions are not followed. State Fire Marshal Butch Browning says it’s not advisable to use space heaters for an extended period of time, but has tips if you do.

State Fire Marshal reminds the public the Halloween costumes & decorations can be highly flammable

Halloween is a time for celebration, but State Fire Marshal Butch Browning reminds the public some costumes and decorations are highly flammable. Browning says costumes should have a fire retardant coating, so they don’t easily burn. He also says nearly half of all home fires during Halloween are a result of decorations too close to a heat source.

Jennings woman allegedly lied about how 4-year-old niece was set on fire

A Jennings woman is facing additional charges for allegedly lying about how her 4-year-old niece was set on fire. State Fire Marshal's office spokesman Brant Thompson says 29-year-old Gail Brown is accused of having sex for money at a home while her 6-year-old daughter and the 4-year-old niece were in a vehicle.

Burn ban in effect for most of Louisiana

A burn ban is still in effect for much of Louisiana, despite some rain in the forecast. State Fire Marshal Butch Browning says almost every parish in the state is under a burn ban until further notice. He adds that Bossier, Iberville, St. Landry and St. Mary are the only parishes not included because the bans are issued on a parish by parish basis.

Arson believed to be the cause of fire at Old Governor's Mansion in Opelousas

The State Fire Marshal’s Office has ruled the fire at the Old Governor’s Mansion and a historical museum in Opelousas as arson. Chief Deputy Brant Thompson says they’re working both scenes separately. He says they are unsure if the arsons are connected but it’s not being ruled out.

Crowley man arrested for allegedly killing girlfriend and burning her body

The Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office along with State Fire Marshal investigators have arrested a Crowley man for allegedly killing his girlfriend and burning her body and home. 33-year-old Nicholas Dupuis has been taken into custody on a warrant for first degree murder and arson.

State Fire Marshal issues warning about using open flames during holiday ceremonies

Many religious fellowships throughout the state will engage in "candlelight services" this Christmas, and the State Fire Marshal's Office is issuing guidelines to organizations who plan to utilize candles this season. Marshal Butch Browning says folks need to understand that there's a possibility for tragedy regarding the use of open flames in assemblies.

Loranger house fire victim is a retired Kenner firefighter

The body of a former Kenner firefighter was found in the ashes of his Loranger home shortly after 6 am Tuesday morning.  State Fire Marshal Butch Browning says the victim is 79-year-old George Schilling.

State Fire Marshal issues burn advisory

The State Fire Marshal issues a burn advisory because of a recent glut of trash fires in populated areas that went out-of-control.  State Fire Marshal Butch Browning says he saw a disturbing pattern of urban fires that got outside of their intended areas.

32 Parishes under burn ban

Half the state is experiencing extremely dry conditions right now and Fire Marshal Butch Browning has ordered a burn ban in those areas. He says 32 parishes in northern and western Louisiana have been issued a cease and desist order for all private burning.
