Legislators begin discussing revenue bills

The House Ways and Means Committee meets today to discuss revenue bills that would raise revenue to prevent or soften proposed cuts to state services. New Iberia Rep. Terry Landry has authored the legislation Governor Edwards supports. Landry’s measure would renew a half-cent of an expiring one-cent sales tax and the Democrat says there’s public support behind his legislation.

Governor Edwards' third special session hopes to end with a budget solution

The powerful lobbying group, Louisiana Association of Business and Industry, says the third special session must end with a solution that solves the state’s budget problems. LABI President Stephen Waguespack says it seems lawmakers are close to finalizing at least a portion of the one-cent sales tax that expires June 30th.

Negotiations have begun this week in advance of next week’s special session, with parties involved hoping to get a deal in place before Monday to avoid another dramatic last-second finish to what will be the last session of the fiscal year. Senate President John Alario says they’re looking to craft a compromise deal that can get the 70 votes needed in the House for passage.

Governor Edwards calls for a third special session in hopes of fixing the fiscal cliff

The third special session of 2018 will begin a week from today and must end June 27th. Governor John Bel Edwards is still looking for a fix to the fiscal cliff. The governor’s Deputy Chief of Staff Richard Carbo says after the legislature failed to replace a large portion of the 1.4 billion dollars in temporary taxes that expire June 30th, they had no choice but to give it one more shot.

Third special session of the year appearing likely

Concerns are being raised that at the current pace, another special session will be needed after June 4th to approve a budget that includes potentially hundreds of millions in tax revenue that is being considered to plug the 648-million dollar budget gap. House Appropriations Chairman Cameron Henry pushed to override the governor’s veto of the budget passed in the regular session.
