Governor Edwards endorses a statewide collaborative effort aimed at anti-cancer strategies

Governor John Bel Edwards endorsed a statewide anti-cancer initiative called “Taking aim at Cancer in Louisiana.” The goal is to improve early detection, improving patient care and treatment, an ultimately improve patient outcomes.

“Patients and their families and future patients receive the most benefit when we can work together, learn from one another and pursue a better strategy,” said Edwards.

Report ranks Louisiana 47th healthiest state for seniors

Louisiana is no longer the least healthy state for seniors, according to a report by United Health Foundation. The state rose three spots to 47th. But Advocacy Director for AARP Louisiana, Andrew Muhl says the Bayou State still has a ways to go in how we care for seniors.

Louisiana ranks last in United Health 2015 Senior Report

The United Health Foundation ranks Louisiana 50th in the nation for Senior Health. That's last according to the Annual America's Health Rankings 2015 Senior Report. Katherine Palmier is the Chief Medical Officer for the East Region of United Health Care. She says among the challenges in Louisiana is a low percentage of dental visits.

Louisiana once again #48 in national health rankings

The United Health Foundation released its 25th annual America's Health Rankings and once again Louisiana is 48th in the nation -- the same rank we had last year. Dr. Catherine Palmier, Chief Medical Officer for the Foundation's East Region, says Louisiana has a very high rate of preventable hospitalizations.

New free programs offered in Louisiana to help people quit smoking

If your New Years Resolution is to quit smoking, right now there are several programs being offered in Louisiana to help you out. According to a report by The United Health Foundation, 25% of Louisianians smoked in 2013. Brandi Bourgeois with the Louisiana Tobacco Control Program says they've developed the 1-800-QUIT-NOW hotline.

Louisiana ranked as the third unhealthiest state in the country

Louisiana moves up one spot in a national ranking for healthiest states, but the pelican state is still ranked near the bottom.  United Health Foundation ranks Louisiana 48th in overall health. Dr. Rhonda Randall, senior health advisor for the United Health Foundation, says a high prevalence of physical inactivity is one of the state's biggest challenges.
