Students who had the GPA, but were a few points shy of
qualifying for TOPS in high school could get another shot at the scholarship
under a bill that is almost to the governor’s desk. The legislation would allow
students who scored 17, 18, or 19 on the ACT, but have a 3.2 GPA after two
years in college to collect TOPS for their last two years. The bill’s sponsor
is New Orleans Senator Wesley Bishop.

Universities would be required to make an action plan to prevent unplanned teen pregnancies, under a proposal approved by the Senate Education Committee. New Orleans Senator Wesley Bishop spent decades working in higher education. He says he’s talked with many young women who dropped out of school for so-called medical reasons.

A measure to create protection for public school students who are parents or expectant mothers has been passed out of the Senate Education Committee. Author of the legislation is New Orleans Senator Wesley Bishop and he says the Louisiana Expectant and Parenting Students Act will help both mothers and fathers receive a diploma.

New Orleans Senator Wesley Bishop has filed a bill that will develop a plan to better support students who are expecting or parenting a child while in high school. He says it would establish the Louisiana Expectant and Parenting Students Act.
