Study: chemotherapy may no longer be needed for those diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer

About 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime and now, a new study has found that many breast cancer patients can skip chemo.

The report, which is being considered a landmark study, is the largest ever done of breast cancer treatment, and comes as the focus turns to cases where chemo’s value increasingly is in doubt.  Dr. Lucio Miele of LSU Health New Orleans says chemo’s prevalence came from a risk mitigation mentally in the medical field.

Kenner Rep. Julie Stokes speaks out about her battle with breast cancer

Kenner Representative Julie Stokes says her treatment for breast cancer is going well as she goes through 5-months of chemotherapy treatment, which forced her to drop out of the race for State Treasurer. Stokes says she is now in her second round of treatment, which is more intense, but the results so far are positive.

Kenner Representative Julie Stokes has bowed out of the State Treasurer's race because of cancer. Stokes announced she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and faces at least five months of chemotherapy. Political analyst Clancy Dubos says Stokes is a highly regarded and respected state lawmaker.

Study finds radiation is overused in elderly women with breast cancer

A study out of LSU Health Shreveport finds radiation is being over used to treat elderly woman with breast cancer. Lead researcher Dr. Quyen Chu says woman 70 and older with stage 1 breast cancer shouldn’t be treated with radiation and should talk with doctors about taking another treatment route.
