Elbert Guillory chosen by LAGOP to bring in more minorities

Former state lawmaker Elbert Guillory has been chosen by the Louisiana Republican Party to lead an outreach effort to bring more minorities to the GOP. Guillory became the first black Republican state senator in 2013 when he switched from the Democratic Party. He says his hope is to convince African-American voters the Republican Party has their interest in mind.

Former state senator Elbert Guillory is in the race for the 4th Congressional District seat, and he’s running a very unique YouTube ad to gain voters’ support, by using coconuts as a metaphor. He can be seen in the ad standing behind a podium, holding a mesh bag with two coconuts.

Lt. Governor candidates discuss their support for film industry

The four candidates running for Lt. Governor discussed how they would improve the film industry in the state at a forum hosted by the Baton Rouge Press Club. Republican Billy Nungesser says when many people see movies filmed in Louisiana, they’re drawn to visit so we need to make changes to the current film tax credit incentive program to keep filmmakers coming to the state.

The four candidates for Lt. Governor are slated to be at a forum hosted by the Baton Rouge Press Club today. Political Analyst Clancy Dubos says it’s a very close race between the Democrat Kip Holden and Republicans John Young and Billy Nungesser, because they have the most money and name recognition.

During a Lt. Governor's candidate debate, Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden said he was appalled that state Senator Elbert Guillory used the "n-word" in a campaign commercial.  Holden, who is an African-American, let his frustrations known when asked about the commercial that Guillory aired which has former President Lyndon Johnson using the racial slur.

Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden is the fourth person to qualify to become the state's next Lieutenant Governor. So far Holden is the lone democrat in the field that features three republicans, Elbert Guillory, Billy Nungesser and John Young. The four candidates are from south Louisiana, but Holden says he'll campaign hard to get votes from north Louisiana.

Opelousas Senator and Lt. Governor candidate Elbert Guillory says the use of the “N-word” in his television commercial is for educational purposes. The TV ad, which only ran in New Orleans, has former President Lyndon B Johnson saying the N-word after signing the Civil Rights Act. Guillory says many people believe the former Democratic President was a hero.

Young leads Lt. Governor's field in cash on hand

The most recent campaign finance figures for the Lt. Governor's race shows Republican John Young leading the field with over $2.2 million in cash on hand.  Fellow Republican Billy Nungesser is not far behind with more than $1.6 million.

Opelousas Senator introduces "Personhood" legislation

Opelousas Senator Elbert Guillory files a constitutional amendment that would let voters decide if life begins at conception. Guillory's proposed change to the constitution would give unborn children the same legal rights that all other people enjoy.
"We don't want to take anything away from anyone, any rights that are presently given by law, but we would like enshrine in our constitution that Louisiana is pro-life," Guillory said.
