Higher ed leaders ask lawmakers not to cut their funding

Higher education leaders made their case during a legislative budget hearing to not cut state funding to public colleges. Governor John Bel Edwards proposed budget calls for a 17-million dollar reduction in funding for campuses. Louisiana Community and Technical College President Monty Sullivan says their institutions can’t keep doing more with less.

LSU Prez says discussion on Johnny Jones future to happen later this year

LSU basketball will look to avoid its 11th straight defeat on Saturday night when they host Arkansas at the Maravich Center. Coach Johnny Jones' team is 9-14 overall, 1-10 in the SEC. During an appearance on the Jim Engster Show, LSU President F. King Alexander was asked about whether a coaching change is needed.

LSU President concerned about enrollment & teacher retention with more cuts coming

LSU President F. King Alexander went before the House Appropriations Committee and expressed concerns over a possible 16th budget cut in nine years. Alexander says they can’t be much more efficient when LSU is already 46 out of 50 flagship universities in per student spending. He says at some point we need to invest in the next generation of students.

LSU President speaks out about budget cuts

LSU President F. King Alexander went before the House Education Committee to talk about how budget cuts are impacting enrollment, faculty and research. Alexander says the university has been receiving more money from the federal government than they have from the state. He says research funding originally for LSU is now going to universities in other states because we don’t invest in higher education.

F. King Alexander censured after firing of tenured professor

The LSU Faculty Senate has voted to censure LSU President F. King Alexander and two other individuals for the firing of a teacher who is accused of using profanity and sexual content that allegedly made students feel uncomfortable. Early childhood education teacher Teresa Buchanan was a tenured professor and dismissed in June. LSU Faculty Senate President Kevin Cope says they’re disappointed how Alexander handled the situation.

LSU President Alexander worries about funding for higher ed

LSU President F. King Alexander is concerned about the continuing decline in state funding for higher education. Alexander says if trends keep continuing, Louisiana will become the second state to not pay a penny on higher education by the year 2027. Alexander hopes the trend reverses with the next governor.

LSU leader very concerned about budget cuts

LSU President and Chancellor F. King Alexander says 2,000 classes will be cancelled and every LSU employee will have to be furloughed if the legislature doesn't restore the massive cut to higher education that's proposed in Governor Bobby Jindal's budget. Alexander says he and five members of the LSU Board of Supervisors recently met with Jindal about the dire situation.

Jindal signs WISE Fund legislation

Today Governor Bobby Jindal signed legislation that will create the WISE fund which is a $40 million dollar pool of money for colleges and universities linked to research and workforce development. LSU System President and Chancellor Dr. F King Alexander says with so many high tech jobs coming to Louisiana, this money will be put to good use.
