LDH reminds residents it's time to get your annual flu shot

The state Department of Health is reminding Louisianans it’s time to get your annual flu vaccination. Assistant Secretary for the Office of Public Heath Dr. Parham Jaberi says the flu season has begun and doctors are starting to see a small number of cases.

Louisiana not seeing as many flu cases as other states

Louisiana isn’t seeing as many flu cases as we usually do this time of year. That’s according to the state’s flu bug expert, Dr. Frank Welch, who says right now, 4 out of every 100 doctor visits in the state is for the flu. He says there’s several reasons we’re seeing a slower flu season this year.

LDH urges everyone to get flu shot

Flu season is just around the corner, and the Louisiana Department of Health urges everyone to go out and get their flu shot. Dr. Frank Welch with LDH says despite what some people may think, getting a flu shot will not give someone the flu, and everyone needs to get vaccinated even if they got the shot last year.

CDC says this year's flu shot will better protect you from the virus

It’s almost flu season again so that means it’s time to get your flu shot. The Center for Disease Control’s Flu Expert Michael Jhung says last year’s flu season was a rough one so if the vaccination is available, you should get one as soon as possible. He says this year’s flu shot will provide better protection from the virus than last year’s.

Flu bug starting to slow down

It appears the peak of the flu season is behind us, but health officials say we can't let our guard down. Doctor Frank Welch, with the state department of health and hospitals, says during the height of the flu season, about eight out of every 100 doctor or hospital visit was for the flu, now that ratio is down to five out of every 100.

The Centers for Disease Control says the flu has now reached the epidemic level in the United States and the state Department of Health and Hospitals says its going to get worse before it gets better in Louisiana. Medical director for the immunization program, Dr. Frank Welch, says the flu situation in the Bayou State is absolutely terrible.

The Centers for Disease Control reports a widespread outbreak of the flu in Louisiana.  In fact, Louisiana is the only state in the Continental US with widespread flu cases.

Flu activity on the rise in Louisiana

According to the Department of Health and Hospitals, flu activity is on the increase in Louisiana.  Frank Welch, Medical Director for the Immunization Program, says the state typically gets a late start on flu activity, but not this year.

CDC says the time to get your flu vaccine is now.

The Centers for Disease Control are stressing the importance of getting a flu shot before the flu season gets any worse. Clinics and doctors offices in Louisiana report the number of diagnosed flu cases is on the rise. CDC immunologist Dr. Michael Jung says some people are more at risk of complications from getting flu than others. They are very young children, the elderly, people with certain medical conditions and pregnant women.

Flu shot time already

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals says it's already time to start thinking about getting your flu shot. State Immunization Director Dr. Frank Welch says, even though its early in the season, they've learned the flu vaccine in some people could last as long as seven to nine months.
