Derrick Stafford found guilty of manslaughter

A 12-person jury in Avoyelles Parish has found law enforcement officer Derrick Stafford guilty of manslaughter and attempted manslaughter in the shooting death of a 6-year-old autistic boy. His father, Christopher Few, was also wounded in the shooting that took place at the end of a chase in 2015.
Stafford will be sentenced on March 31st. He faces up to 40 years in prison. The jury could have found Stafford guilty of 2nd degree murder, which would have resulted in an automatic life sentence.

Cardell Hayes found guilty of manslaughter in the shooting death of Saints star Will Smith

After taking 5.5 hours to deliberate a 12-person jury found Cardell Hayes guilty of manslaughter in the shooting death of former Saints star Will Smith. Hayes was also found guilty of attempted manslaughter in the shooting of Racquel Smith, who was injured in the shooting that took place after a car accident in New Orleans on April 9th.

Seth Fontentot is a free man as Austin Rivault Act moves through legislature

Seth Fontenot of Lafayette is a free man after spending 10 months behind bars for the shooting death 15-year-old Austin Rivault. Many people thought his sentence was too lenient after he was convicted of manslaughter. Lafayette Sen. Page Cortez has a bill that says if you commit a felony with a gun that results in a fatality, you should at least spend 3 years in prison.

Seth Fontenot to be re-sentenced today

Today, Seth Fontenot will be re-sentenced on his manslaughter and aggravated battery conviction in a 2013 shooting that killed 15-year-old Austin Rivault and injured two others.  In July, Fontenot was sentenced to 3 years at hard labor with all but 13 months suspended.

Fontenot was on trial for the shooting death of 15-year-old Austin Rivault and the injuring of two others. The defendant claimed he fired to scare the teens who he thought were breaking into his truck. The prosecution argued the shooting was intentional and denied the victims were up to no good.

Natchitoches Central High School student succumbs to injuries

The 18-year-old Natchitoches Central High School student who was involved in an altercation with another student at school has died as a result of injuries he sustained.  Johnquaries Smith passed away Tuesday morning.

Galiano man charged with manslaughter, after bar fight victim dies

A Galiano man has been charged with manslaughter, after a man he beat up died from his injuries. Lafourche Parish Sheriff's spokesman Brennan Matherne says the beating took place November 15th, at a bar in Golden Meadow. He says 40-year-old Jacob Chauvin (pictured) allegedly punched the victim in the face, knocking him down a flight of stairs.
