The US Justice Department reaches an agreement with Louisiana to help ensure people with serious mental illnesses are not living in a nursing home.
The agreement follows a review by the DOJ in December 2016 that claimed the state was unnecessarily relying on nursing homes to serve people with serious mental illnesses. So what does the timeline for the transition look like?

Letters are set to go out on Thursday to 37,000 Medicaid recipients informing them they could lose their benefits, because of a lack of state funding. About 20,000 of those live in nursing homes. Louisiana Department of Health Deputy Secretary Michelle Alletto says anyone who receives the letter needs to apply for other programs.

A state audit finds that the Louisiana Department of Health is not calculating Medicaid rates for nursing facilities accurately. Louisiana Legislative Office Director of Performance Audits Karen LeBlanc says they discovered 19.7 million dollars the state could have saved this past year was spent on patients not covered by Medicaid.
