A bill allowing judges to inform juries about whether or not a victim in a car crash was wearing a seat belt died in a Senate Committee. The bill was promoted as potentially leading to smaller settlements in some cases, which would drive insurance rates down. Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt, the bill’s sponsor, says we should trust judges to make the right call.

A bill by Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt that would allow civil court judges to decide whether or not juries are allowed to know whether or not a crash victim was wearing their seat belt is being heard in committee today. Hewitt says crashes involving people not wearing seat belts end up leading to heftier settlements.

A survey from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission finds Louisianans are buckling up but drivers and passengers in pickup trucks are not doing so as often.
Executive Director Dr. Katara Williams says the seat belt usage rate has consistently increased annually in the Bayou State since 2009. But she says many residents in our state drive trucks, so we must convince them to buckle up.More

As we near the Thanksgiving holiday, the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission is coordinating a statewide Click It of Ticket campaign aimed at saving lives. Executive Director Lt. Col. John Leblanc says last year's Thanksgiving holiday was one of the most dangerous of the year on Louisiana roadways.

State highway safety officials say seat belt usage is up more than 3% this year; it's largest statewide jump in a decade. Louisiana Highway Safety Commission Deputy Director Ken Trull says 82 & a half percent of drivers use seat belts regularly, and he credits public awareness and outreach campaigns.
