The Department of Children and Family Services is starting a statewide campaign to recruit more, desperately needed foster parents. Secretary Suzy Sonnier says fostering is a temporary situation with a permanent impact. She says there are about 48-hundred children in foster care.

The Department of Children and Family Services announces changes to the food assistance program to encourage able-bodied recipients without children to move into the workforce.  Secretary Suzy Sonnier says a federal waiver was allowed to expire that creates changes in an able-bodied person's SNAP eligibility.

DCFS spreading word about safe haven law

Under legislation approved in the last session, more information is being distributed to the public about Louisiana's safe haven law, which allows parents to legally give up a baby until they're two months old. Department of Children and Family Services Secretary Suzy Sonnier says she wants people who feel like they're in a crisis to know this law exists.

Peterson opens discussion on disciplining children

The recent indictment of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson on child abuse charges has opened a nationwide discussion on disciplining children with corporal punishment.  Peterson allegedly used a switch, a tree branch stripped of its leaves, on his son reportedly causing multiple injuries to the child.

DCFS creates new rules clarifying where certain benefits cannot be used

The State Department of Children and Family services has put further restrictions on how individuals who receive certain welfare assistance can spend those dollars. DCFS secretary Suzy Sonnier says welfare recipients can no longer use their debit cards at various stores including nail salons, jewelry store, cruise ships and psychic businesses.

DCFS disqualified 6 people who abused the system during a computer failure

The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services disqualifies six food stamp recipients and more could also lose their benefits for deliberately making purchases that exceeded their balance during a computer failure. DCFS Secretary Suzy Sonnier says they've conducted a thorough investigation to ensure the abusers are properly disqualified.

DCFS releases 18 Most Wanted Deadbeat Parents

The State Department of Children and Family Services is out with Louisiana's 18 "Most Wanted" non-custodial parents who owe almost $866,000 in past due child support. DCFS Secretary Suzy Sonnier says these parents have repeatedly evaded efforts to collect child support that is critical to their children.
