Health leaders urge state legislature to raise legal buying age for tobacco products to 21

Three major medical leaders are calling on the state legislature to raise the tobacco purchasing age to 21. The presidents of the Orleans and Jefferson Parish Medical Societies along with Smoking Cessation Trust CEO Mike Rodgers are behind the effort. Rodgers says raising the legal age from 18 to 21 could prevent thousands from smoking.

Bill could prohibit the use of cigarettes or tobacco on school property

A measure that would prohibit the use of tobacco products anywhere on a public or private school campus is scheduled to be heard in the House Education Committee today. West Monroe Representative Frank Hoffman says in the 90’s, Louisiana made it illegal to smoke in schools, but this legislation will expand on that law.

The American Lung Association’s annual State of Tobacco Control report finds Louisiana is failing in efforts to reduce tobacco use. An estimated 22% of Louisiana adults smoke.

CVS stops selling tobacco products

CVS announces they will stop selling tobacco products by October 1. Director for the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco Free Living Torrie Harris says they have worked to get pharmacies in Louisiana to rid tobacco products from their shelves.
