Yet another lawmaker has voiced her disapproval of multiple Saints players refusing to stand for the national anthem. Denham Springs Representative Valarie Hodges wants to examine the team’s agreement with Louisiana that contains state subsidies. She’s called for a discussion to take place during next month’s legislative budget meeting. Hodges supports the players’ right to protest.

House Appropriations begins discussing the budget, and once again it's the committee's plan to hold back $206 million dollars in spending to avoid a midyear shortfall. But Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne says if money isn't appropriated, it won't be available during the course of the year in the event of a shortfall.

A bill that would ban so-called sanctuary cities fails to get the necessary votes to pass the full House. The bill included a fee which is why 70 votes were needed to pass. The legislation is aimed at New Orleans, which has a policy that prohibits officers from questioning the status of individuals who commit or report a crime. Denham Springs Representative Valarie Hodges says that type of policy is wrong.

Legislation to allow victims of domestic violence with a protective order to carry a concealed handgun for 45 days without training will be heard in the Senate after getting approval from the House. Denham Springs Rep. Valarie Hodges, says her bill provides an expedited process for a victim to seek concealed carry training.

A measure that seeks to outlaw sanctuary cities in Louisiana advanced out of a House committee. The term is applied to some cities in the US that have policies designed to not prosecute undocumented immigrants.

A new law is in effect in Louisiana that cracks down on marriage fraud, especially in cases where illegal immigrants attempt to fraudulently gain US citizenship. Denham Springs State Representative Valarie Hodges, who sponsored the measure, says state marriage licenses haven't been updated for about 40 years.

The tens of thousands of children crossing over into neighboring Texas is raising concerns Louisiana may face an immigration problem of it's own. Denham Springs Representative Valarie Hodges, a member of the House Committee on Criminal Justice, is calling on the state leadership to develop a plan of action for immigration in Louisiana. She says the crisis next door is spreading to states across the country.
