A Youngsville man has been arrested after allegedly counterfeiting 100 dollars bills, and police say when caught, he hid the cash in pants and then later tried to dispose of the evidence in the cop car that was driving him to jail. Duson Police Chief Kip Judice says just before being apprehended, 29-year-old Steph
en Young tried to hide the incriminating evidence…
“He had concealed inside of places where the sun doesn’t shine, several more bills. A rear facing camera in our police car actually caught him removing that six 100 dollar bills, and stashing them in the police car.”
Young’s alleged attempt to hide that evidence led to his re-arrest shortly after he posted bond for the counterfeiting charges.
Judice says Young was caught after a tip from a local gas station casino who was suspicious of the cash. The Chief says after accepting the cash, the casino checked, and then double checked it’s validity.
“Using the marker, they identified the bill as being true. Once the bill was passed through one of the counters, was when it was determined to be identified as a one dollar bill as opposed to a 100 dollar bill.”
Young is facing several counts of Monetary Instrument Abuse, along with a charge of Obstruction of Justice.
Police say Young’s vehicle contained a printer, cleaning solvents, and more, along with 2,000 dollars in fake 100s. Judice says it was a sophisticated operation.
“He was washing off the ink put on by the Treasury Department on one dollar bills, and using that paper. Once the ink was removed, he was just simply scanning a 100 dollar bill and printing over that.”
Judice warns retailers to keep a close eye on cash coming in during the holiday season, a major time for counterfeiting.
