If you have seen one of the state’s digital message boards lately, you may have noticed the safety messages are more creative. State department of transportation spokesperson Rodney Mallett said drivers tend to ignore a mundane message that says to slow down or buckle up, so they decided to spice it up with messages like…
“‘Santa sees all. Buckle Up,’ ‘There’s no reindeer named Speedy,’ and we’ve also had during football season in November, ‘Tailgating is for football, not for roadways,'” said Mallett.
The state has just over 100 digital message boards that can be found along interstates or major thoroughfares that alert motorists about accidents and provide other traffic safety information. Mallett said they want to put a message on the boards that gets a driver’s attention
“Later on this month, we’re going to be putting up, ‘Santa’s in town. Drive sober or get pulled over,’ so you see what we are trying to do is put out the same message, but spice it up a little bit,” said Mallett.
Mallett said they’ve received great feedback about their unique traffic safety messages…
“Another person emailed me directly and said they liked the new message boards and that her daughter, who she was taking to school, she and her daughter were trying to come up with some,” said Mallett.
