Democratic Congressman Cedric Richmond is the highest ranked member of the Louisiana delegation in the U.S. House and plans to use his position to push for solutions to the state’s most pressing issues. He says Democrats will pursue climate change legislation and green energy policy, one that can address the state’s coastal, and economic woes.
“Economic development and the job creation that goes along with it, Louisiana is ripe for that. We can restore our coast and at the same time we can create jobs for Louisiana citizens,” said Richmond.
Richmond is the Assistant to the Majority Whip.
He says the first thing that needs to be addressed though is the government shutdown and puts the blame on the President Trump for holding federal workers hostage until he gets funding for a wall initially promised to be paid for by Mexico. Richmond says the government shutdown is having a local impact.
“National financing in New Orleans, the USDA, you look at our TSA agents that are working but not getting paid, that’s abomidable,” said Richmond.
The Congressman says he’s aware of the growing interest in impeachment from an animated group of freshman Democratic lawmakers, but cautions that any attempt to do so without indisputable evidence would distract from the party’s domestic goals like minimum wage increases and paid family leave.
“This is person has done a bunch of things that rise to the level of impeachment, however, I think you have to wait on the Mueller report, because it doesn’t make sense to bring the country to impeachment if we can’t convict them in the Senate and remove him,” said Richmond.
President Trump has tweeted out that how can you impeach a president that’s done nothing wrong, had the most successful first two years of any president and is the most popular Republican in party history.
