Former Louisiana congressman John Fleming of Minden is reportedly considering a run for governor. Fleming represented Louisiana’s 4th District for eight years and left the House in 2017. LSU Shreveport Political Science Professor Jeffrey Sadow says it might be too late for Fleming to join the race.
“If he had really been interested, he might have been expected (to run) right after Senator John Kennedy said he wasn’t going to run,” said Sadow.
There are already announced two Republican candidates, Congressman Ralph Abraham and Baton Rouge businessman Eddie Rispone.
“I think in terms of leg work so late in the run, he’d be further behind than he would really need to be to be competitive. So really, in terms of the field, it’d be more of a dilutive effect on the Republicans,” said Sadow.
Fleming is currently a deputy assistant secretary of health information information technology reform.
Sadow said you may see some minor candidates hop into the race, but he says the likelihood of any other major candidates is probably low.
The primary election is October 12th.
