Two people are dead following a multi-vehicle crash on I-10 in Lafayette Parish, including the daughter of the head softball coach at UL Lafayette. The crash happened shortly after 1 AM today and claimed the lives of 45-year-old Kenneth McNeil of Houston, Texas, and 24-year-old Geri Glasco of Arnaudville, who was an assistant softball coach for UL Lafayette. State Police Trooper Thomas Gossen says the wreck happened when an 18-wheeler encountered slower moving traffic in an active construction zone.
“It was not able to stop in a timely manner. It struck the back of a pickup truck, which then struck an SUV, which then struck an 18-wheeler, which then struck another 18-wheeler. So it was a five-car crash,” said Gossen.
Gossen said the two that were killed died at the scene of the crash and he adds alcohol tests on all of the drivers involved are pending.
“The 18-wheeler drivers were uninjured. We did get a breath sample for the 18-wheeler driver who caused the accident and there was no alcohol present” said Gossen.
The area has several hot spots of active construction and Gossen encourages drivers to practice patience and vigilance when behind the wheel.
“You may pass one and then not see another one for a few miles and then there is another active crew. That’s why we want everybody to be patient, slow down, and be more aware in those zones,” said Gossen.
Gossen said 67-year-old William Rawlings of Killeen, Texas, was behind the wheel of the of the semi that caused the accident.
