According to research from staffing firm Robert Half, 72% of managers say college basketball playoff activities improve employee morale. New Orleans senior recruiting manager Carrie Lewis said when in moderation, there are definite potential benefits to group activities tied to sporting events.
“Celebrating sporting events like March Madness in the office can foster comradery and team spirit. It provides an opportunity for workers to bond as they talk about the scores and root for their favorite schools,” said Lewis.
LSU plays Yale today, and Lewis, said she foresees some workers being sidetracked by the game. She adds in today’s candidate-short market, it’s more important than ever to keep their existing staff happy.
“Having these designated office festivities will allow to employees to enjoy the sporting event during the specific time and activity. Hopefully then they will be less inclined to use other company time to celebrate the sporting event,” said Lewis.
Lewis said 75% of companies will organize sports related festivities, 45% will host friendly competitions, and 43% will allow team apparel because of the benefits it can produce in the workplace.
“Allowing employees to take quick breaks to check scores or chat with coworkers about the tournament can help them recharge. Maybe an informal lunch or dinner at a restaurant where you can all watch the game together, that too builds the comradery,” said Lewis.
