State Fire Marshal investigators are on the scene of a mobile home fire that left two children dead in the Franklinton area. Shortly after midnight, firefighters were dispatched to the home. State Fire Marshal Butch Browning said a total of seven people were in the home at the time of the blaze.
“Two adults and five children. Two of the children perished in this fire, a six-year-old male and a 10-year-old female. The three other children were taken to Baton Rouge hospitals for treatment,” said Browning.
Browning said the fire has shaken the community. Deputies are currently conducting their investigation into the origin and cause of the fire.
“It’s a very very sad situation. The community in Franklinton is mourning right now. We received a lot of calls of people asking the questions about things like smoke detectors and those type of things and we don’t have any answers at this point,” said Browning.
Browning said the tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of having an escape plan in the event of a fire.
“You need to practice a home escape plan in your home. What that really is, is a preplanned action of your family where you have two ways out of your home, and you meet in the front yard, maybe by the mailbox,” said Browning.
