A two-month-old child is dead and the father is in jail after admitting to the police to striking the child several times in the back of the head. Welsh Police Chief Marcus Crochet says the suspect did not have any previous criminal history.
“22-year-old Zackary Chevallier, I don’t think he’s from here, but he’s been residing here in Welsh for some time now. We’ve only come across him one time during a traffic stop,” said Crochet.
Authorities got the call around 6 o’clock on Thursday afternoon in reference to a child not breathing. The child succumbed to the injuries Friday morning.
Crochet says it is rare that an event like this happens in the town and it has left the Jefferson Davis Parish community shaken.
“In Welsh, we’re a small town, and you know everybody knows everybody and this is just a very sad and unfortunate case for this family and definitely for this child,” said Crochet.
Chevallier is charged with manslaughter and is being held on at the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail.
