Iconic UL Lafayette Baseball Coach Tony Robichaux has died after undergoing multiple surgeries following a heart attack. The voice of the Ragin Cajuns Jay Walker says their hearts are shattered, but their faith is not, which is what Coach Robe would want during this time of sorrow.
“He was always very quick to talk about his faith and the man that he is because of his faith and I think he tried to instill that into his players,” said Walker.
Robichaux was 57. The Crowley native suffered a heart attack on June 23rd and had two surgeries.
After eight seasons as the head coach at McNeese State, Robichaux became the head coach in Lafayette in 1995. He led the Cajuns to the College World Series in 2000 and won over 900 games at U-L Lafayette. Walker says the success of the program led to the construction of one of the finest college baseball stadiums in the country.
“That doesn’t happen without Tony and they are eighth in the nation in attendance this past year, for the second year in a row and doesn’t happen without Tony,” said Walker.
And Walker says Coach Robe was more than a baseball coach.
“He said that his job as baseball coach was to make his players better husbands and better fathers and I think he did that,” said Walker.
